So, let's dig into what the data actually says about AI's capacity for understanding.
The Illusion of Understanding
One of the biggest challenges is defining "understanding" itself. Are we talking about semantic understanding – the ability to correctly parse the meaning of words and sentences? Or are we talking about something deeper – empathy, the ability to grasp the emotional context and motivations behind human behavior? AI has made undeniable progress in semantic understanding. Large language models (LLMs) can now generate text that is grammatically correct and often surprisingly coherent. They can answer questions, summarize documents, and even translate languages with impressive accuracy.
But this is where things get tricky. LLMs are trained on massive datasets of text and code.
